세계 각국은 지구 환경변화에 따른 대체에너지 발굴을 주요 정책으로 내세우고 친환경에너지 확보에 총력전을 펼치고 있다. 소리 없는 에너지전쟁을 치르고 있는 셈이다. 이러한 가운데 풍력에너지는 신재생에너지 중 성장가능성이 가장 높은 발전원으로 각광받고 있다. Each country over the world makes development of alternative energy according to climate change top priority policy and dedicates to securing green energy. It seems like a silent war of energy. In this situation, a wind power has the most growth potential of renewable energy. 융복합산업의 성격을 가진 풍력발전 분야는 설비의 신뢰성이 무엇보다 중요하다. 발전효율과 유지보수 등 경제성에 직간접적으로 영향을 주는 요소들이 다양하기 때문이다. 특히 해상풍력의 경우 육상풍력에 비해 두 배 가까이 많은 설치비용과 까다로운 유지보수로 인해 검증된 풍력발전시스템을 요구하는 게 일반적이다. A reliability of facilities is important in convergence and integration technology like wind power. It is because there are many elements that affect economic feasibility, for example, generating efficiency and maintenance directly or indirectly. Especially Vestas carried out many projects from installation wind turbines in Hang-Won in 1998 to installation wind turbines in Sung-San in 2010 on Che-Ju Island. It has delivered more than 280MW(accumulative) to the South Korean market. We had interview in writing with Sean Michale Lance Sutton who is a president at Vestas Asia Pacific in Singapore through e-mail. Q. 최근 일본에서 발생한 원전사고로 인해 친환경에너지에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 풍력시장의 성장을 예측하는 의견이 많은데 대표님의 생각은.

As a concern about environment-friendly energy is growing because of accident of nuclear power plant in Japan, there are predictions that market of wind power plant will increase. What is your opinion about that?

 

풍력은 2020년 까지 전 세계 전력의 10%를 차지할 것으로 예상됩니다. 보다 경쟁력 있는 가격과 산업적인 측면에서의 효율적이고 신뢰성 있는 전송으로 석유와 가스의 자리를 대체하고 있습니다.

A world that, if we have our way, will be powered by far, far more than the predicted 10% of electricity by wind by 2020. A world where Wind takes its place alongside Oil & Gas through ever more competitive cost of electricity and its efficient and reliable delivery on an industrial and global scale.

Vestas is famous for its high rates of R&D investment. How much is the current R&D investment and what is its strategy?

 

베스타스는 풍력발전 분야에 전사적 노력을 기울여 왔습니다. 30년 간 풍력에너지 개척에 전념, 세계 최고의 R&D센터를 수립하고 수 천개 터빈의 실시간 모니터링을 실시하고 있으며 2만명 이상의 직원을 통해 전 세계에서 풍력에만 집중하고 있습니다.

풍력이 석유를 비롯해 가스와 동등한 위치에 오르도록 노력하고 있으며 4만3,000기의 터빈을 6대륙 66개 나라에 설치, 연간 9,500만MWh를 생산하고 있습니다. 베스타스의 핵심 사업은 전기 생산에 필요한 풍력에너지를 사용하는 풍력기술의 개발과 생산, 판매, 유지보수 분야 입니다.

본사가 있는 덴마크 이외 지역인 싱가포르와(2007) 인도 첸나이(2008년)에 R&D 센터를 설립했습니다.

인도 첸나이 R&D 센터는 덴마크를 제외한 세계 최고의 시설을 갖추고 있습니다. 이곳에는 400명 이상의 전문가가 근무하고 있으며, 그들은 풍력터빈의 설계와 공업기술에 관한 전분야를 담당하고 있습니다. 특히 지난 2월 24일에는 세계 최고의 풍력터빈 요소 테스트 센터와 3만5,000 스퀘어 피트(약 1,000평)의 추가적인 사무 공간을 인도 R&D 센터에 세웠습니다.

Vestas opened its two Research & Development Centres outside Denmark in Singapore (in 2007) and Chennai (in 2008). The Indian Tech R&D Centre is the largest R&D facility outside Denmark. Today the centres employ over 400 specialists, who contribute to all aspects of the value chain in wind turbine design and engineering. On 24 Feb 2011, Vestas opened a state-of-the-art Test Centre for wind turbine components and added additional 35000 sq. ft. of office space to the Indian Technology R&D facility. Together these centres form a crucial part of ensuring Vestas’ role as a world-class supplier of wind energy solutions, and strengthen Vestas’ presence for the Asia Pacific region.

Vestas is a global company supplying wind power facility to 60 countries over the world. Please introduce the Vestas Asia Pacific.

 

베스타스 아시아·태평양 사업부는 풍력기술의 세계리더로서 아시아 및 태평양 지역 사업을 수행하고 있습니다. 사업부 본사를 덴마크에서 싱가포르로 이전하고, 2006년 8월부터 정상 가동하기 시작했습니다.

Vestas Asia Pacific is the Asia Pacific business unit of Vestas, the world leader in wind technology. Vestas Asia Pacific relocated its Head Office to Singapore from Denmark and was fully operational on August 2006.

 

베스타스 아시아·태평양 사업부는 한국을 비롯해 인도, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 일본, 타이완, 필리핀 등에서 판매와 서비스 사업을 담당하고 있습니다. 싱가포르에 있는 본사에는 North-Southeast Asia, 인도, 호주 등 3곳에 판매부를 두고 있으며, 이곳에서는 그들 각각의 지역에서 발생하는 판매, 프로젝트 실행, 서비스, 유지보수의 책임을 맡고 있습니다.

Vestas Asia Pacific has sales and service offices in Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. Reporting to the Regional head office in Singapore are three sales units: North-Southeast Asia, India and Australia. These Sales Units are responsible for running the daily operations in their respective region, which includes sales, project execution, service and maintenance.

 

North-Southeast Asia 판매부는 싱가포르에 기반을 두고, 한국과 일본, 타이완 동남 아시아, 파키스탄과 같은 신생시장을 책임지고 있습니다.

North-Southeast Asia sales unit is based in Singapore and covers the emerging markets like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Pakistan.

 

인도 판매부와 사업장은 첸나이(Chennai)에 사업본부를 두고 인도 대륙을 맡고 있습니다. 베스타스는 인도에서 수 십년 동안 2,435MW 규모의 풍력발전설비를 설치 했습니다. 현재 Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala and Rajasthan 등에 풍력터빈이 설치돼 있습니다.

India Sales and Operations is headquartered in Chennai and serves the Indian sub-continent. In India, Vestas has been present for over a decade and has an installed capacity of 2435 MW. Vestas has installed turbines in Wind rich states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala and Rajasthan.

 

호주 판매부와 사업장은 멜버른에 사업본부를 두고 있으며 호주, 뉴질랜드, 태평양 지역을 담당하고 있습니다. 우리는 남호주 북쪽에 111MW 급인 Waterloo 풍력발전을 건설하기 위한 풍력지대와 서부 호주의 밀 산출지대에 206MW 급 Collgar 풍력지대를 확보하는 계약을 체결했으며, 최근에는 서남부 Victoria에 Leighton Contractors와 함께 Macarthur 풍력지대를 짓기 위해 AGL, Meridian Energy와 계약을 체결했습니다. Macarthur 풍력지대는 420MW급으로 청정·재생에너지를 제공하는 남반구에서 가장 큰 풍력발전 지대가 될 것으로 기대하고 있습니다. 이러한 에너지는 베스타스가 제작한140기 V112-3.0 MW풍력터빈에서 나오게 됩니다.

Australia Sales and Operations is headquartered in Melbourne and serves Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region. In the past year, Vestas has secured major contracts to build the 111MW Waterloo wind farm in mid-north South Australia, the 206 MW Collgar wind farm in Western Australia’s wheat belt, and recently signed a contract with AGL and Meridian Energy to build the Macarthur wind farm in south-west Victoria in conjunction with Leighton Contractors. The Macarthur Wind Farm will become the home of the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere, with 420 MW of clean and renewable energy generation capacity coming from 140 Vestas new V112-3.0 MW wind turbines.

Vestas has world-class manufacturing facilities at Chennai and Puducherry and has the distinction of being the first company to introduce higher capacity turbines to the Indian market in 1999. Vestas is also credited with being the first wind turbine manufacturer to export turbines from India to the rest of the world.

We know that you are highly interested in Korea’s wind power market in recent. Please tell us the status of wind power business in Korea until now.

 

베스타스는 한국의 풍력에너지 성장과 함께 할 파트너 입니다. 2003년 이래 200개 이상의 풍력발전 터빈을 한국에 설치해 왔으며, 현재 한국 내 풍력발전의 70%가 우리 시스템입니다.

Vestas has been the leading partner for Wind Energy in Korea. We have installed more than 200 wind power turbines in Korea since 2003 and currently almost 70% of installed wind power plants are using Vestas wind turbines.

 

판매부와 서비스부로 조직된 베스타스 코리아는 2006년 서울에 설립된 이후 고객과 함께 빠른 속도로 성장하고 있습니다.

Vestas Korea was established a Sales and Service organization in 2006. Its Korean office is based in Seoul. Since then it has grown up in a rapid speed in parallel with the customers. We established relationships with customers by doing O&M through innovative development of service, technologies and products. We also provided the customers with high value life cycle service offerings. Vestas Korea is expected to do an important role for Vestas to help Korean government implement its green growth policy with Vestas’ accumulative experience worldwide.

 

한국 시장의 첫 프로젝트는1998년 제주에 풍력터빈 15개(행원풍력단지), 총 8MW의 풍력 터빈을 설치 한 것입니다. 이후 한국에서 10개의 프로젝트에 참여하고 있으며, 지금까지 280MW 이상을 공급했습니다.

Its first project was the installation of 15 Wind Turbines of accumulative 9.8 MW on Che-Ju Island in 1998. Since then, Vestas has undertaken ten projects in S.Korea. Vestas has delivered more than 280 MW (accumulative) to the South Korean market.

 

2006년 강원도에 설치한 98MW급GaWip 프로젝트(강원풍력)는 한국에서 추진한 가장 큰 풍력에너지 프로젝트였습니다. 최근 설치 된 것은 2009년 10월 제주에서 진행한 33MW급(삼달풍력)입니다.

The inauguration of the GaWiP project in the Gangwon Province in October 2006 was the largest Wind Energy project in Korea comprising 98 MW. The latest installation was completed for 33MW in Jeju Island on Oct. 2009.

Please tell us about your management policy or management philosophy.

 

고객뿐만 아니라 환경, 직원을 비롯해 우리가 활동하고 있는 모든 사회에 이르기까지 책임의식을 가지고 있습니다. 우리가 설치한 풍력단지 주변에 사는 사람들에게 이익이 되는 방안을 모색하고 있으며, 특히 교육, 건강, 환경에 있어 그들의 생활과 공동체에 지속가능한 공헌이 될 수 있도록 노력하고 있습니다. 또한 직원들이 CSR(Corporate Social Responsibility; 기업의 사회적 책임) 활동에 참여하도록 적극 권장하고 있습니다.

이러한 적극적인 CSR 활동으로 최근 Asian Institute of Management와 Intel 에서 ‘Asian CSR Excellence Award’ 를 수상했습니다.
